About the Destination

Championship Golf, Coast to Coast.

England holds more Open Championship venues than anywhere outside Scotland, and nowhere are they closer together than on the coast north of Liverpool. Royal Liverpool, Royal Birkdale and Royal Lytham & St Annes sit within an hour of each other. Between them lie Hillside, Formby, Southport & Ainsdale and West Lancashire, some of the finest links in Britain, all within a short drive.

We base most England trips here, where you can play a different championship links every day without long transfers. For those with more time, we add the Kent coast or the great heathland courses around London. We place you in golfer-friendly hotels close to the courses, handle tee times and caddies, and plan the driving so your days are spent on the course, not on the road.

History

Where the Claret Jug Was Lifted.

Bobby Jones won the Open at Royal Lytham in 1926 and again at Hoylake in 1930, on his way to the Grand Slam. Royal St George’s became the first English course to host the Open in 1894. At Princes, next door, Gene Sarazen won in 1932 with the sand wedge he had just invented.

More recently, Tiger Woods won at Hoylake in 2006 and Rory McIlroy led from start to finish there in 2014. Jordan Spieth won at Birkdale in 2017, and Ryan Fox lifted the Claret Jug there in July 2026.

Playing these courses, you walk the same fairways where those Opens were decided.

Beyond the course

More Than Golf

Liverpool gives your rest days real character. Walk Mathew Street and step into the Cavern Club, where the Beatles played nearly 300 times. Spend an afternoon at The Beatles Story on the Royal Albert Dock. On a matchday, we can arrange tickets to see Liverpool at Anfield or Everton at their new waterfront stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock.

In Kent, Canterbury Cathedral and the White Cliffs of Dover sit close to Sandwich and Deal. Around London, Sunningdale and the Surrey heathland are within easy reach of the city’s theatres, restaurants and Wimbledon.

Founded in 1869 and among the oldest seaside courses in England. Bobby Jones won here in 1930 on his way to the Grand Slam. Tiger Woods won in 2006, using his driver only once all week, and Rory McIlroy led from start to finish in 2014. Brian Harman lifted the Claret Jug here in 2023. Firm, fast and often windswept off the Dee Estuary, it rewards thoughtful golf over power.

Arnold Palmer’s 1961 victory here helped revive American interest in the Open. Tom Watson won here in 1983 and Jordan Spieth in 2017. In July 2026, Ryan Fox lifted the Claret Jug on its closing green.

In 1894, Royal St George’s became the first course outside Scotland to host the Open. Ian Fleming, a member here, wrote it into Goldfinger as “Royal St Marks”. Darren Clarke won here in 2011 and Collin Morikawa in 2021. It’s huge, rumpled and blind in places. Combine it with Royal Cinque Ports at Deal and Princes, which all share the same stretch of coast.

Willie Park Jr.’s heathland masterpiece, opened in 1901, set among heather, pine and silver birch. In 1926 Bobby Jones shot a qualifying 66 here: 33 shots and 33 putts, every hole a three or a four. It’s often called the perfect round. Near London, it pairs with Swinley Forest and St George’s Hill, two of Harry Colt’s finest heathland courses.
